Dead Rat Removal Riverview FL
Find It. Remove It. Eliminate the Odor. Today.

That smell isn’t going away on its own — and it’s getting worse. A dead rat in a wall cavity or attic reaches peak odor in 3–5 days and can persist 2–6 weeks while creating secondary health hazards and fly infestations. We locate the carcass with thermal cameras and odor mapping, remove it, sanitize the cavity, and treat with enzyme deodorizer. One call ends it.

What Happens When a Rat Dies in Your Wall

Understanding the decomposition timeline helps explain why speed matters. In Riverview’s subtropical heat — where attic temperatures reach 130°F in summer — the process accelerates significantly compared to cooler climates.

Day 1–2
Fresh Stage
Little to no odor. The body begins initial decomposition. Blowflies can detect the carcass within minutes and lay eggs.
Day 3–5
Active Decay
Peak odor. Sulfur compounds and putrescine overwhelm the area. Maggots are active. The smell enters the living space through duct work and gaps.
Week 2–3
Advanced Decay
Odor begins declining but flies emerge as adults and can infest the home. Bacteria remain active on surrounding surfaces.
Week 4–6
Dry Stage
In dry wall cavities, the body desiccates. Odor fades but bacteria, hair, and bone remain — along with pheromones that attract new rodents to the same cavity.
⚠ Important Health Note

Dead rats are a direct health hazard. Hantavirus, Leptospira, and Salmonella remain viable in decomposing tissue and contaminated surfaces. In Florida, the warm, humid environment extends pathogen survival. Children, elderly adults, and immunocompromised individuals are at elevated risk. Do not attempt removal without proper PPE — our technicians are trained and equipped for biohazard handling.

How We Find & Remove a Dead Rat Others Missed

Wall cavities, attic bays, and subfloor voids — we find them all

🌡
Thermal Camera Search
Dead organic matter shows a distinctive cold signature on thermal imaging. We scan walls and ceilings systematically to isolate the cavity before cutting any drywall.
👃
Odor Mapping
We trace airflow patterns from vents and wall gaps to triangulate odor origin. Combined with thermal imaging, this gets us to the right spot with minimal drywall disruption.
🧪
Enzyme Deodorization
After removal, we treat the cavity with a professional enzyme deodorizer that breaks down the organic compounds causing the smell — not a masking agent that wears off in days.
🔒
Entry Point Sealing
A dead rat is a symptom. If we don’t find and seal how it got in, another rat will take its place within weeks. Every removal job includes a full exterior inspection and sealing.

Where Dead Rats Hide in Riverview Homes

Poison bait stations — sold by many pest control companies — are the leading cause of dead-rat-in-wall calls we receive. When a rat is poisoned, it seeks water before dying, often migrating deep into wall cavities or insulation where it is unreachable. This is one reason we never use poison.

Interior Wall Cavities
The most common location — especially between floors or in exterior walls where insulation traps the rat. Odor is strongest through nearby electrical outlets and light switches where air escapes.
Attic Insulation
Blow-in insulation in Florida attics can hide a rat carcass for weeks. The HVAC system then distributes decomp odor through every duct in the house.
Under Kitchen & Bath Cabinets
Rats that entered through plumbing penetrations often die behind or beneath cabinets. The enclosed space concentrates odor quickly.
Subfloor Voids
In homes with crawl spaces or raised slabs, dead rats in the subfloor void produce odor that rises through flooring seams and AC registers on the floor level.

Dead Rat FAQ

Straight answers from our Riverview team

Can you find a dead rat without cutting drywall?
In many cases yes — thermal imaging and odor mapping allow us to identify the cavity before cutting. When a small access cut is required, we keep it to one outlet-size hole where possible and can recommend a drywall repair contact afterward.
How long will the odor last after removal?
After the carcass is removed and we treat with enzyme deodorizer, most clients notice a major odor reduction within 24–48 hours. Residual odor from urine-soaked surfaces may persist for a few days but continues to decline. If odor persists beyond a week, there may be a second carcass — we will return to check.
A pest company put bait stations — could that be why the rat died in my wall?
Yes — this is the most common scenario we encounter. Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides cause rats to seek water before dying and to migrate away from the bait station. Interior wall cavities near water pipes are a common destination. This is a well-documented consequence of bait station use inside occupied structures.
Do you also stop more rats from coming in?
Every dead rat call includes a full exterior inspection. If we find open entry points — and we usually do — we seal them with 19-gauge steel mesh on the same visit. Removing the rat without sealing the building guarantees the problem repeats.

The Secondary Infestation: Blowflies After a Dead Rat

Most homeowners focus on the odor. But a decomposing rat in an inaccessible space triggers a secondary infestation that can be more immediately disruptive than the rat itself.

Day 1–2: Egg Laying
Blowflies detect a carcass within minutes through olfactory receptors. They locate and lay eggs even through small gaps in drywall. A single female lays 150–200 eggs per batch. Eggs hatch in 12–24 hours in Florida heat.
Day 3–7: Larvae (Maggots)
Active maggot stage. If the carcass is accessible to the colony they remain contained. In a wall cavity, larvae can migrate out through electrical outlets and into the living space as they seek pupation sites.
Day 10–18: Adult Flies
Adult blowflies begin emerging from pupal cases. In a sealed wall cavity, hundreds to thousands of flies emerge into the living space through the same outlet and gap pathways. This stage is when most homeowners call us in crisis mode.
Why Speed Is Critical
Removing the carcass before day 3 prevents the full fly lifecycle. After day 10, pupae are already distributed around the carcass site and continue emerging for 1–2 weeks even after removal. Early removal is always the cheaper, easier outcome.

The Bait Station Problem: Why Poison Creates Dead-Rat Calls

The majority of dead-rat-in-wall calls we receive share a common history: a prior pest company used bait stations.

How Second-Generation Anticoagulants Work
Brodifacoum and similar active ingredients prevent blood clotting. Affected rats become severely thirsty as internal hemorrhaging begins — a well-documented phenomenon called anticoagulant-induced polydipsia. They seek water sources and migrate toward plumbing: kitchen walls, bathroom walls, utility areas. The rat dies inside these cavities, often days after leaving the bait station area and far from where the pest company placed it.
Why We Never Use Poison
Every dead rat we remove that came from a prior company’s bait station is a preventable problem. We use snap traps inside sealed structures only. Snap-trapped rats are caught at the trap location and removed immediately — no migration, no wall cavity death, no secondary odor problem. This is not a preference; it is the professional standard for responsible rodent management.

What to Do Right Now While You Wait for Us

While we are en route for a same-day or next-day removal, these steps reduce your exposure and slow the secondary infestation:

1
Seal the affected room from the rest of the house
Use towels or tape to block the gap under the door. This contains fly emergence to the room closest to the carcass and slows spread through the HVAC system.
2
Close the nearest AC register
If the odor is strongest near an AC register, close it. HVAC airflow distributes decomp odor throughout the house — reducing airflow through the affected zone slows distribution.
3
Do not use odor masking products
Air fresheners and odor bombs mask the smell temporarily and make it harder for us to trace the odor pattern back to the source. Leave the air as undisturbed as possible — the odor gradient is data we use to locate the carcass.
4
Note which outlets or vents have the strongest odor
Odor escapes the wall cavity through electrical outlets, switch plates, and baseboards. The outlet or vent with the strongest odor is usually closest to the carcass. Take notes — your observations speed up our location process significantly.

Dead Rat Removal: More FAQ

What if there are multiple dead rats?
Multiple carcasses in different locations is the signature of bait station use — poisoned rats migrate and die where they fall. We locate all carcasses on a single visit using thermal imaging and systematic odor mapping. Each one is documented, removed, and the cavity treated. We do not leave until we are confident we have found all sources of the odor.
I opened the wall myself and can’t find it. What now?
Common — the odor often appears to come from a different location than the actual carcass because of air movement through wall cavities. Thermal imaging works even after a small access hole has been cut. We can usually locate the carcass on a second inspection attempt using thermal data that a visual search misses.
Will I need drywall repair?
Sometimes. Access cuts are made as small as possible — typically outlet-size or smaller. We can recommend a local drywall repair contact for post-removal restoration. Occasionally a carcass is accessible from above (attic) or below (crawlspace) without any drywall cut at all. We determine the least-invasive access route before cutting anything.
Is there a health risk to my family right now?
There is an elevated but manageable health risk. Decomposing rat tissue carries bacterial pathogens that can become airborne. Keep the affected area ventilated with windows open if weather allows. Children and immunocompromised individuals should minimize time in the most affected rooms until the carcass is removed and the cavity sanitized. Do not attempt DIY removal without N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and eye protection.
What does the odor elimination actually involve?
After removal, we apply a professional enzyme-based deodorizer directly to the cavity surfaces — not an aerosol sprayed into the air. Enzyme deodorizers break down the organic compounds at the molecular level. Masking agents wear off; enzyme treatment eliminates. For heavily contaminated areas (heavy urine soaking or multiple decomposition sites), we may recommend an ozone treatment or surface fogging as a supplemental step.
